A Wedding at Mellor
ST. THOMAS’ CHURCH, MELLOR
The Parish Church of St. Thomas, Mellor, sits at the top of a hill, discovered in 1998 to have been the site of an Iron Age hill fort. Christian worship has taken place here for many centuries and the church building contains much of historical interest.
The pulpit, carved from a single oak trunk, is dated 1330 and is exceptionally unusual
in being a wooden example from the pre-
From the outside of the church there are beautiful views of the Cheshire plain, even up to the hills of Wales. It most certainly is an ideal venue for a wedding.
MARRIAGE – MORE THAN JUST A WEDDING
The Vicar runs an occasional short weekend course for couples planning to marry in Mellor Church. The aim of the course is to help couples to look forward confidently to marriage and to be as realistic as possible about the future and each other. During the weekend they look at the content and meaning of the marriage service and invite couples to share ideas and expectations. The course also covers different aspects of married life such as communication, sex, conflict and change. The course is held in the Vicarage in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere and includes attendance at the 9.30 Service in the Church on Sunday morning.
The Marriage Service from the Church of England’s ‘Common Worship’ liturgies encourages couples to choose many aspects of the service to make the occasion a very personal one. Readings, hymns, music and other aspects of the service are chosen in consultation with the vicar.
The church has a choir which sings to an excellent standard and which has toured in different parts of Europe. They have also sung in various English cathedrals, and have an extensive repertoire from which you can choose. They will be accompanied on the superb pipe organ, built in 1977 by Noel and John Mander.
The church lends itself to photography, both because of its historical interest and
the stunning views when the wedding party steps outside at the end. A few yards down
the road stands the well-
