Mellor Church Women’s Evening Fellowship

Founded originally by Women attending Mellor Church, the meetings are now open to all who wish to meet together in fellowship. Its aim is to co-ordinate the many activities of women resident in the Mellor and Marple area; to stimulate friendship and to listen to talks and lectures of interest to the Fellowship members. Each year the Fellowship supports fund raising for a selected Charity.

The Fellowship has a Committee of nine members who serve for three years and from whom a Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer are appointed. The officers should be communicant members of the Church of England.The Committee members during their time in office aim to provide a varied programme of events.

The group meet on the 2nd Wednesday in the month at the Parish Centre, Mellor.

The July meeting is normally an Outing to which family and friends are invited.  There is no meeting in August.

The current subscription is £10 for the year (visitors £1 per visit)

Are you one of those people who spend so much time rushing round that you long for the occasional time when you can be bored and think of all the things you never have time to consider normally? If so, you could be just the person we are looking for to help in the printing of Outlook.  Never has there been a more dull or “watching the paint dry” occupation. Just the thing to do to unwind from the trials of daily life.  So why not join the small and select band of volunteers and become an expert on the printer and stapler.  Please join us.

MELLOR MARCH                Tim Lowe

The annual Mellor March takes place on Sunday 5th May from 9.30 a.m. onwards. The walk has now raised over £130,000 for cancer charities and roughly follows the Mellor Parish boundary.  The registration venue is the Royal Oak. It is a circular route so people can head for home at any stage and we ask that those not starting from the Oak to please call in and register at the Oak when you pass on the walk.  The very first march in 1994 started from the church gate with a number of walkers setting off after the morning service (breakfast is available at the Hare and Hounds). Yes, the misspelling is intentional, good reader, for it is the fate of your esteemed editor to be Chairman of the Mellor Church Fete again this year (which I think I was last year but nobody told me). The only good thing about it up to now is drinking pints in the ‘Devvy’ at Fete Committee meetings. I must admit, I’m getting fed up with masochism and consider it to be a very overrated pastime.  However, I will struggle on for this year but then intend to resign to spend more time with my I/pod.  But for now, good citizens and cheeky burghers, we need more items for our stalls, mainly toys but also books (you must have finished ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ by now), jewels, unopened bottles of Moet Chandon or tins of pate de foie gras. We particularly  need ‘Teddies’ for our ‘Teddy tombola’. Anything and everything in fact. Bring them to Sue McAllister at the Parish Centre or for any toy collections, please ring Catherine Starling on 07989 032868 or 427 1320; or Guy Nicholls on 427 2187 — then come to the fete and buy them all back. It’s going to be a great day.

The days around Ascension Day (9th May this year) are traditionally a time when the church asks God’s blessing on the land and prays for its fruitfulness. This is usually done during a procession around the parish (See Vicar’s Viewpoint).

In Mellor Parish this year, Evening Prayer on Sunday 12th May will be replaced by a short Parish walk, starting at 6.30 p.m. at St Thomas’ Church, Mellor.    

Everyone is welcome.

The walk will last about an hour, and will finish at the  Parish Centre.

The Friends of Mellor War Memorial Gardens hold regular working parties to ensure the gardens are kept to as high a standard as possible (including planting and maintaining the area around the Memorial itself).  Working parties are held on the 2nd Saturday of each month.  Depending upon what is required, additional sessions are also arranged on an ad hoc basis.    

Please come along and help with the gardening.  There are always a great variety of tasks for you to do, which suit all ages and abilities.  To get involved, please contact Diana Cole by telephoning her on 07761 466428.  Thank you.  Dates for the working parties are as follows (Saturdays 10am – 12pm): 11 May- 8 June -13 July -10 August -14 September - 12 October - 9 November.

FIELD PARISH WEEKEND

Saturday/Sunday June 8-9th 2013

A parish weekend in the beautiful surroundings of Lathkill Dale near Bakewell is being planned by members of the church and will be the first time the congregation has been away together for many years.  Everyone is invited to come and join in.  The weekend will be based around people camping in Over Haddon.  Activities will start at Saturday lunchtime followed by a BBQ in the evening.  The Sunday morning will consist of an outside service and a parish picnic in the afternoon. You have the option of joining in all or part of this weekend and further details will follow.      

Tent Appeal for Fete

We are trying to draw up a list of people who are the proud owners of small tents and who would be prepared to lend them to the fete for use on the day should we need them. We are talking here of smaller tents, say 5 or 6 feet square for use as toy stalls or book stalls, etc.  We have our usual donors but sometimes they are not available and we might be stuck for a tent.

Christian Aid Week 2013               Patricia  Harrison

Christian Aid week this year is May 12th to 18th

Last year the Street Collection raised over £12 million. This amounted to just over 13% of the annual expenditure of the charity so it is a very worthwhile and much needed effort. For every £1 raised 85p goes direct to charitable expenditure. Most of the rest is used in fundraising.More and more of the work of Christian Aid is directed to long-term projects that help the world's poor raise themselves out of poverty (48%); projects supervised by the charity so that corruption is avoided; some ( 26%) is kept in reserve to enable a rapid response to emergencies; and 12% is spent on education campaigning advocacy. The local collectors in Marple raised over £12,000 in 2012.  Unfortunately we have lost some of the volunteers and are now very much in need of others to take their place in this work. Helpers are asked to distribute and collect envelopes to the occupants of one road. Anyone who can help in the Compstall area can contact me on 427 6542. Our advertisers are important to us.  We are also important to our advertisers.  This can be a win-win arrangement.  These days running any business is difficult so advertisers value the work they get through OUTLOOK.  The Parochial Church Council has recently decided that it will, as far as possible, use companies that advertise in OUTLOOK or are local.  The Parish of Mellor has lost many shops over the years and we believe that we should encourage centres such as Marple Bridge to continue as viable shopping places.

There are also many businesses that operate from homes in the area and the existence of some of these is not well known.  We would like to build up a directory of all the businesses in the area and to start this we have placed all the OUTLOOK advertisements on our website.  To see them go to this website and on the Home page click on the "Mellor Church Business Directory" button. It would be helpful if readers would do three things:

1. Use companies that advertise in OUTLOOK whenever possible.
2. Let me know if you are aware of any company that might be interested in advertising.

3.  Let me know of any home based companies we might not know about.

The weekend of May 24th and 25th will see a return of the increasingly  

widely-regarded annual textile event Textile Journeys 3.                           

Friday 24th May  at 7.30 pm in the Parish Centre –

`A Journey through my Favourite Quilts’.

This talk is by the world-renowned textile artist and quilt maker, Ineke Berlyn.  Ineke will be bringing many of her lovely quilts to show.  She is very interested in the use of colour and her presentation will be of     interest to anybody who likes to look at beautiful things.

Tickets are £10.00 including coffee/tea and home-made cakes and are available from Meg Barley 427 4370 or Rosemary Hawksley 427 8808.                   

Saturday 25th May 10am – 4pm in the Parish Centre                         A choice of 3 all-day workshops : `Inspired by Sashiko' led by Hannah Leighton Boyce, ‘English Piecing and Beyond’ led by Eve Roberts, and `Pieced Landscape' led by Ineke Berlyn. Ineke’s workshop will be for more experienced textile artists, and the other two are suitable for beginners as well as those wishing to extend their skills.                Tickets for the whole day, including  a home-made buffet lunch, cost £35. We continue with another ever-popular bridge drive ( the last one was sold out in a week so if you would like to take part, book early !).

Future plans this year for the ‘Friends’  include a Brass Concert in Mill Brow on September 7th, a talk `Garden Birds of Autumn and Winter ` by David Tideswell in October, and an Italian themed evening in November.
