Mellor Open Gardens 2012
Sunday 17th June 2012
In 2012 it will be 20 years since this much-loved community event was first held,
and so this notable anniversary will be celebrated by staging the event again on
Sunday 17th June.
It will be organised by supporters of the Friends of Mellor Parish Centre and Cancer
Research UK, and so will benefit both a local and a national Charity.
Preparations are now underway, and if you would like to help, or know of any gardens
in the Mellor area which would make an admirable attraction, please contact either
Mary Hoult or Peter Oldham.

Church Treasurer - Urgently Wanted!!! David Ackroyd
Back in October I asked if there was anyone who would consider becoming the Treasurer as I have completed 7 years. I even suggested how the job could be divided to make it more manageable. Unfortunately no-one has come forward so I have had a rethink! It seems to me that the problem may be that no-one feels able to accept the overall responsibility. I am, therefore, proposing the following:
Treasurer – with overall responsibility including advice to the PCC, preparing accounts, handling our investments and support to Assistant Treasurers. I am prepared to continue in this role if the following three posts can be filled.
Assistant Treasurer (Gift Aid and Envelope Scheme). This post is already very well filled by Gordon Johnson assisted by Karen Greenough.
Assistant Treasurer (Income). This would be a simple administrative role. It would involve banking cash and cheques every week and recording information on an excel spreadsheet. The amount of time would amount, on average, to about 2 hours a week with one extra hour at the month end.
Assistant Treasurer (Expenditure). This would again be an administrative role. It would entail writing cheques once (or sometimes twice) a month, keeping a check on direct debits and standing orders and recording information on an excel spreadsheet. The amount of time would amount to about 5 hours a month (mostly in one block). Running the payroll for our staff would also be required but Andrew Sanders who currently does this has said that he is prepared to continue to undertake this task.
Please think seriously about the possibility of undertaking one of the two vacant positions. Full training, including in the use of spreadsheets, will be available and I will work with you until you are confident about what you need to do.
“SING TO THE LORD” follows Mellor Church Choir for a full year - from the splendour of Rippon Cathedral to the winter wilds of a remote Welsh peninsular where they prepare their Christmas music.
Ending with Holy Week in St Thomas’s church, this film combines moving music with the good humour and fun that is all part of being in Mellor Church Choir.
This DVD makes an ideal gift - and it can be also shown to prospective children and parents who are thinking of joining the choir.
Priced at £10, all profits are for Choir funds. DVDs can be obtained from Mannmade Productions in the Parish Centre.

Christian Aid Week Pat Harrison
Christian Aidthis year is from 13th to 19th May. There has always been a shortage of collectors in Compstall that has been compounded by resignations of people that have done it before. Please consider if you could spare two separate hours to distribute and collect envelopes, for this the main source of funds for Christian Aid.
If you can help please call me on:

There will be a Service of reflection and meditation for Peace in the World in conjunction with the display of the Pax Christi 'Icon of Peace' at the Holy Spirit Church, Leigh Avenue, Marple on Tuesday February 7th at 7.45 pm followed by refreshments.
New Altar cloth required Christine Hamilton
The St Thomas cross altar cloth now has several holes in it where burning pieces of candle wick have landed on it due to excessive zeal in blowing the candles out. (Can I take this opportunity to plead with servers, and anyone else responsible for extinguishing candles on the altar, to take the greatest care. Even a small burn weakens the linen and it will eventually go into a hole, even if it does not do so immediately. Altar cloth linen cost at least £30 per metre and we need five metres for a cloth!) I am proposing to purchase some new linen in the near future but my days of hunching over a sewing machine are unfortunately over. I had to pay someone to turn the hem on the last cloth, but before I do that again, I wondered if there is anyone out there with a sewing machine who could do the job for the love of the church. It only requires plain stitching. Please contact me if you can help on: O1663 764044
1st Mellor Guides Sue Holt
1st Mellor Guides now has over 20 guides, but urgently needs a new leader in addition to myself if the unit is to continue. The unit meets 12 evenings a term, on Tuesday evenings from 7-8.30pm at the Mellor Parish Centre.
Last term, we went tubing, performed a Murder Mystery Play, made Mexican sugar skulls and danced Bollywood style, so there is lots going on.
This would be an ideal opportunity for any young girls looking to gain volunteering experience for Duke of Edinburgh awards and/or personal statements for university applications.
There is some flexibility, so you don't have to attend every single meeting. Unit helpers also welcomed.
Please contact Sue Holt on 0778 950 6436 if you are interested in helping.
Judith Shiel
Lent is a good time not only for giving something up, but for taking something up. As usual we will be holding a short time of prayer every day during Lent, and I hope this will prove useful. On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays it will be held in the library in the Parish Centre. On Wednesday mornings the usual service of Holy Communion will take place in the church. Details of times will appear on the pew sheet shortly. Churches Together will also be running their usual Lent discussion groups. There will be five meetings starting in the week beginning 27th February, and the theme will be `Handing on the torch – sacred words for a secular world', with material specially produced by Archbishop John Sentamu and others from York. Further details soon.
MESS Judith Shiel
Marple, Mellor and Marple Bridge Energy Efficient Strategy continues to work to raise awareness, in the local area, of ways to cut carbon emissions, and to support people’s efforts to be more energy efficient. MESS is again holding an Energy Efficient Showcase on Saturday 25 February at the Senior Citizens Hall in Marple where the various energy related products can be viewed and explained by a large number of stall holders.
Over the last six months MESS has shown a number of documentary films on environmental issues. On Monday 20 February The End of the Line (where have all the fish gone?) will be shown at Marple Methodist Church at 7.30pm. All are welcome.
